What should people in power do when their power is threatened?Today in class we participated in an activity were reacted as we thought rulers of this time period would in this situation. Specifically we put ourselves into the shoes of Prince Metternich. Metternich represented austria during the Congress of Vienna. The class was provided with background information at the beginning of the class which helped us when we were choosing which reactions Metternich would most likely make. This activity gave us a better understanding of Metternich and other rulers actions when people were threatening their powers.
One way that Monarchs during this period protected their right to rule was by creating a Holy Alliance. This idea was presented by Czar Alexander of Russia during the Congress of Vienna. The Holy Alliance reinforced the idea that Monarchs have the divine right to rule. Also all citizens living under the Holy Alliance believed that going against the monarchs was like going against god therefore the likelihood of a revolution decreased . Many of the rulers during this time were liberalists and therefor liked tradition. This idea of maintaining original Monarch rulings appealed to them. Another perk of the Holy Alliance is that Monarchs were able to send troops into different countries and stop occurring revolutions. This system provides protection for all Monarchs in Europe. Although this is appealing for Monarchs, the Holy Alliance in itself may give citizens a reason to revolt. The goal of The Congress of Vienna was to resolve the many issues occurring throughout Europe. The idea of a Holy Alliance appealed to many of the countries excluding England.
Although this was the best idea to protect the power of monarchs, the Holy Alliance did not Benefit citizens of European countries in the same ways. Personally i think that if European Monarchs were willing to sacrifice a small bit of their power a compromise would have been made that both rulers and citizens would have benefited from. The Holy Alliance did provide security for European Monarchs although it may not have been successful in preventing Revolutions in Europe.
